A New Summer Tradition

For the past three years, our good friend Paul Dalbey, formerly of More Front Wing, and his soon-to-be wife have made their way to Music City to visit us each August. Does three years in a row make this a tradition? During the previous two visits, we took advantage of his presence to record another episode of One Take Only – the videoblog of Oilpressure.com. For the past seven years, my friend John McLallen and I have done these video segments to mixed reviews. They are unscripted, unrehearsed and unedited. Some love them, some hate them. There is no middle ground. With Paul on here each August, will this become a new summer tradition?

In this episode, we discuss the current championship battle along with the new car and the upcoming race at Pocono – which Paul and I are going to as we did last year. There is good info in this episode, although it was recorded on this past Saturday morning before the news broke that Mikhail Aleshin had been fired by Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Such is the risk when you run something like this four days later. But if you have been passing on these, I would ask that you give this one another chance. It’ll be time well spent.

As many of you know, Leigh Diffey called last week’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen. He is also scheduled to do the broadcast for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race at Michigan. We all know Diffey from being the voice of Formula One races since 2012 as well as being Bob Jenkins’ successor on NBCSN’s IndyCar broadcasts since 2013.

Some will find what I’m going to say as odd as I think it is, while others will wonder why I find this odd at all. As you know, there was no IndyCar race last weekend. While I enjoy watching and following IndyCar races, I don’t build my entire weekends around them like George does. But at this point in the racing season, I relish the few weekends when there is not a race.

Things are sounding more and more like the Verizon IndyCar Series will be racing somewhere in Mexico next season. In an article at Racer.com, Marshall Pruett reports that IndyCar CEO Mark Miles is having serious dialogue regarding a race south of the border sometime next year.

The Best Pre-Season In Sports

Did you watch the NFL Hall of fame game on TV last night? I’m embarrassed to say that I did. Well, not all of it but I watched more of the game that usually serves as the unofficial kickoff to the NFL pre-season than probably most people did. I know that doesn’t speak well for me. Most teams in the NFL play four pre-season games each year, but the two lucky teams that are tabbed to participate in the Hall of Fame game get to play a fifth pre-season game. I use the word “lucky” with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

The Silliest Of Silly Seasons

If you watched Sunday’s race from Mid-Ohio, you heard Robin Miller give a silly season update. Some of what he said we had heard before, but a lot of the dominos have to do with whether or not Andretti Autosport switches from Honda to Chevy for 2018. I’ve seen reports that Michael Andretti hopes to have a decision made within the next week or two. It sounds like if all goes to plan we should know something definite before the series reconvenes at Pocono in less than three weeks.
