Welcome To Day Two At Road America

Welcome to Day Two at Road America. Yesterday afternoon, the wind picked up considerably to the point that the large flag stands that teams have at their respective garages in the paddock were blowing over. I also saw a sign in a concession area go airborne and strike a fan in her side. Fortunately, she appeared to be uninjured.

With that came cooler temperatures. Yesterday’s high was to have been around 78. Today’s high is predicted to be 68. It was 55 when we woke up and felt like it. The wind is supposed to stick around for today, but diminish by Race Day tomorrow. Let’s hope so. It’s very breezy and the air feels like a blustery day in October. Yesterday we were in shorts, today it’s jeans and a jacket.

Last night, we took advantage of a local tradition – a Friday Night Fish Fry. We followed a tip from longtime reader and Wisconsin resident Ron Ford, at a place called Schmitty’s Oar House that overlooks Lake Winnebago. Susan got walleye and I had perch. Both were good and I had a couple of locally brewed Spotted Cows to go along with it. Good tip, Ron.

The final practice before qualifying is about to start. Mikhail Aleshin was detained in Europe with visa problems, so Touring Car driver Robert Wickens was filling in on Friday, posting the twentieth fastest time. Rumor has it that Aleshin is on the grounds today and will be in the cockpit when practice starts at 11:00. Some have bemoaned the fact that Schmidt Peterson Motorsports would not give the nod to Wickens. My question to them is – are you crazy? Aleshin is currently fifteenth in points, but a DNS this weekend would hurt his chances of cracking the Top-Ten in points by the end of the season. Common sense should prevail and we’ll see Aleshin in the car this weekend.

Anyway, I hear the engines of the IndyCars warming up for practice, so we are heading out. In the meantime, please follow me on Twitter at @Oilpressureblog or Susan at @MrsOilpressure. Please check back later n the day.

It looks like someone enlightened IndyStar’s “insider”, as he likes to call himself, before he wrote Saturday’s article. On Friday he didn’t know the difference between Road America and the Milwaukee Mile. What an embarrassment! Robin Miller is definitely having the last laugh.

  2. Ron Ford Says:

I am very pleased that you enjoyed the food and ambiance at Schmittys. The “Spotted Cow” beer was a good choice also. yes, it has been a bit unseasonably cold and windy the past few days.
