A Legendary Day

SScruggs

It was an interesting Legends Day at the track for us. Instead of walking around taking photos of the same strange people and places, I went down to the track and got some pictures of the Driver’s Meeting and Award Presentation and just some random shots of what was going on around the track.

George’s brother, nephew, and nephew-in-law came to town and they spent a lot of the day in the museum. George’s bother and nephew are engineers, so they have a tendency to discuss and dissect what made the cars go. As for me, it has wheels and a body—it’s a car, end of story.

Also Eric was coming on Legends Day and we were going to the Jason Aldean concert (more on that in a bit). He has brought his girlfriend, Brittney and it is her first Indianapolis 500 and you know how we love to indoctrinate “newbies.” What is that line from the movie, Pretty Woman—“People’s reactions to opera the first time they see it is very dramatic; they either love it or they hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don’t, they may learn to appreciate it, but it will never become part of their soul.” We are hoping for the latter. This is Eric’s 11th straight Indy 500—almost half his life—I hope we built some good memories.

But back to my original topic, you know we can always wax poetic on memories with our kids. I guess the most memorable part of the day for me (besides seeing the vintage cars on the track) was the Jason Aldean concert. I can’t resist getting another dig in here, but George was supposed to get us VIP tickets, but waited to long (I think they sold out within 15 minutes), so we had General Admission tickets. What a mass of humanity it was! I had celery thrown on me, I got called grandma, and danced with a guy who had had a few too many. I had to show everyone around that this “grandma” (which I am NOT) still had the moves. Unfortunately, there were several people with their phones snapping away at my “moves.” I am so glad everyone did not have the capability to take pictures instantly while I was in high school or college.
