Welcome To Bump Day At IMS

First of all, I want to apologize for not posting last night. After dinner at the Mug-N-Bun, we got back to the hotel and just crashed.

This is a surreal experience at IMS this morning. There was no traffic, there was plenty of parking and there are currently no people in the stands. I don’t mean there are a few people – I mean NO people. I don’t know if it is the fact that there is to be little or no drama today due to no bumping, or if it’s because the Pacers are playing in town or a combination of the two.

Actually, there is going to be some suspense today, but it’s not who will be bumped – it’ll be how many drivers will be qualified when the gun fires at 6:00. Jay Howard and Pippa Mann have both acknowledged that they will not be in the race. That leaves the thirty-three that are committed. If all goes well, they will be the thirty-three starting next Sunday. However, there were two crashes during qualifying runs yesterday. If that happens today, it will be interesting to see what develops.

As I type, the non-qualified cars are being wheeled out onto pit road. My friend John McLallen spoke to Larry Foyt yesterday and he was not happy. Conway’s car is already second in line behind the car of Simona de Silvestro. Hopefully, we’ll have an uneventful day with qualifying and then some extended practice time for all teams to work on race setup. I’ll be back here in a bit. Please check back.

  1. NBCSports picked the wrong bump day to broadcast for 6 hours.
