A Great Gift Idea Just In Time For Christmas

I wish that I had half the energy that Monica Hilton (a.k.a. The Race gIRL)) has. I would blame the difference in our energy levels on our age difference, but I don’t think I had anything close to her stamina when I was her age. Well, she’s at it again. Monica is working tirelessly promoting the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series Calendar, with proceeds going to benefit two excellent organizations: The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and Racing For Kids.

The calendar is a 12” x 9” (12" x 18" open) photographic wall calendar featuring current stars such as Will power, Justin Wilson, Marco Andretti, Simona de Silvestro, Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Danica Patrick and Alex Lloyd. The calendar also features a race-day action spread and a special Indianapolis Motor Speedway centennial-era celebration in the month of May. In addition, it includes valuable coupons for discounts on IMS merchandise and IZOD apparel, as well as a showcase of photos submitted by IZOD IndyCar fans.

Most of us are familiar with the inspirational story of Sam Schmidt, an IndyCar driver who crashed while testing at Walt Disney World Speedway in January of 2000. His resulting injuries left him a quadriplegic. After five weeks on a ventilator, Sam slowly showed progress. While going through months of rehab, Sam met several other patients with spinal-cord injuries. He realized how fortunate he was to have a support network that many of his fellow patients lacked.

Before he was discharged, Sam had already shifted from racing mode to trying to help others afflicted with his same condition. He launched the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation just fourteen months after his crash, in order to help find a cure for paralysis. Of course, Sam is also busy with his very successful Firestone Indy Lights team – Sam Schmidt Motorsports.

Sam was recently recognized by the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation with the 2008 Visionary Leader Award, because of his dedication and commitment to funding research and bettering the lives of those who are paralyzed.  For more information, visit http://www.samschmidt.org.

The other beneficiary of the proceeds for the 2011 calendar is Racing For Kids. Robbie Buhl has been heavily involved with Racing For Kids since his days in CART in the early 1990’s. What they are best known for is the hospital visits that take place in every city that is hosting a race. The celebrity drivers visit sick children in order to brighten and enrich their lives. These aren’t just quick visits for photo-ops. The drivers that go on these visits spend a great deal of one on one time with the sick children.

Since it was founded in 1989, Racing For Kids has visited more than 20,000 sick children in 450 hospitals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Australia. In addition to their visits, Racing For Kids has raised over $5 million through special fund-raising projects. For more information, visit http://www.racingforkids.org.

The calendars are $15.99 each plus shipping & handling. When ordering, please enter the code word "Oilpressure" in the instruction box, for tracking purposes. You may order the calendars here.

Monica has asked all of the IndyCar blogging community to help promote this great cause. These calendars are great looking, make wonderful Christmas gifts and help provide donations to two worthwhile organizations. Thanks to Monica for all of her help in promoting these great causes as well as everything she does for the IZOD IndyCar Series.

A great idea and a great cause, count me in…
    One question….
When do you suppose that Ms. Hilton might be willing to offer up her likeness/es for a similar calendar….?

  2. It is really a classy thing that Monica and IndyCar fans are doing to support two very worthy programs. Count me in also.

And, I too will be anxiously awaiting a calender featuring this girl who has been described as “sleek, fast, and charmingly inappropriate”

Thanks for the heads up George. With my busy schedule I’ll need a few just for me. I would like to encourage Sam Schmidt racing to produce a polo that I can proudly wear and tell people about Sam and his foundation. Of course, I don’t need to wear a shirt to tell anyone about the worthyness of the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, but I would be proud to wear it.
