Culturally, they would prefer to be considered more a part of Arkansas or Mississippi, than the Volunteer state. Having lived there in another lifetime, I know personally that they want nothing to do with anything east of Shelby County. Don’t even bother mentioning anything to do with Memphis State University in the same breath with Tennessee sports.

Seriously, though, it’s a cool thing to have such a major IndyCar presence here, even if there are only about 15 of us who know about it. Makes me a little more proud of my new hometown.

I am so proud of our local boys, but no one else seems to care. It is sad that our city has such a rich motorsport heritage, and these guys are just ignored. (We’ve often joked about having a parade for Dario down by Puckett’s store).

We’ll continue to make our treks to Barber, Kentucky, and Indy while our neighbors ask “now what kind of racing is it you like?” I really enjoy your blog, and thanks for pointing out something that has been chapping my hide for a long time!
