Izod is competing with Polo Ralph Lauren (who currently are the outfitters for the US olympics) and are very high end retailers. Izod is most definetely more interested in selling apparel than winning races. IMO, (which means nothing to Edward,) but none the less, the new star of the Izod show is RHR and GR who are Izod's only hope for a new face in this American Sport. If RHR can succeed Izod's mission and overcome the foreign look (almost like rejects from Formula-one racing venue) and the very confusing atmosphere of the past, maybe it will be a decade of change for "American Open Wheel" Racing.
As far as Daniker, she will be remembered for her lack of apparel and the objectification of the woman in her sport. Winning in Japan under Honda, during our American financial meltdown was almost a non-event, at least in the American media. Jimmy Kimmel of course highlighted her career with the
spoof of "I pee myself and am a baby-ass." on You-tube. Very sophisticated.
Maybe the Izod culture of racing on Sunday and selling clothes on Monday will be what we remember for this decade. Luv the clothes, luv RHR and GR! Great commercial in Times Square!

"The end of the decade saw the announcement that the next season would feature more road/street courses than ovals. This is an ironic twist for a series founded on the premise of all-ovals in contrast to the CART series of the nineties. Fifteen years later, the same series now embraces what it once openly despised."

I would have to say that the fact that we have a unified series now (which is a GREAT thing) is the reason for this. Sure the IRL was founded as an oval series, but with unification the series has changed. A 50-50 mix of oval/road courses is about what it should be. Having a large majority of ovals will alienate old CART fans the same as a vast majority of road courses will drive away old IRL fans. I guess each of us just has to accept that with the way the IRL is now, neither of us is going to have the mix of courses that we want. What we do have is one unified series that is much stronger and has a much better future potential than we had in the past! I was one of those hard core CART fans. I don't particularly like ovals, but I watch them all because I am a fan of open wheel racing and this is what I've got.

To me, the most significant event of the decade for AOWR was, by far, the fact that there is now one series-something that was absolutely necessary for the sport's survival

I must disagree with you on one thing, though. It's not just the CART/ChampCar fans who are unwilling to let go of the past-see "Defender of the IRL" weblog for proof of that. However, in every other area, I agree with you for the most part.

Roy, thank you for giving me a good laugh. Had Marty Reid remained as the sole IndyCar play-by-play announcer, the series would most definitely be done for!

I put "about the same" for today's survey. I think that the current IndyCar series is stronger than the IRL circa 1999, but weaker than CART circa 1999, so on average, that's about the same. There are a lot of factors that offset from the past and current eras.

THEN: big fan numbers, plenty of car sponsorships, lots of teams, mainstream media coverage, stable-ish TV package(s).

NOW: strong title sponsorship, emerging superstars, lessons learned from the past (increased outreach to fans, increased emphasis on the history of the sport), the opportunity to create a new car from basically scratch, and most important (and the trump card above all), a unified, coherent, identifiable series.

Are things perfect now? Of course not. But they could be a hell of a lot worse. I like where we're headed.

I would have to say that the "Oughts" were the "lost decade" for Open Wheel racing. While the split occurred in the 90's I don't think the full economic effect of the split was seen until this decade. But now that this is all behind us, I think that we are poised for an Open Wheel renaissance. The Teens will be a great decade, and will make us forget that trials and tribulations that you have described. How's that for optimism?
