This is not a mystery… he was sub-par in Atlantics, 2006 was a weak field even with Al III’s $$$ issues. The Indy Pro Series wasn’t exactly a talent meter the years he ran either. Just look at that era’s champions… AJ Foyt IV & Ed Carpenter

At 27, Al Unser III is past his sell date. I can see him running Grand-Am or another RR pro series but never an Indycar. Sorry but a famous name only gets you so far… just ask Jeff Andretti (& Jeff’s record in training ground series is MUCH BETTER than Al III’s…)

Al III ran well in the Pro Series (Indy Lights) the same years that Marco was beginning there, and he ran well. It’s a shame that, in this day, with open wheel’s sponsors so few and far between, it’s so tough to get even a little support. It’d be great to see him get a shot to prove his worth, even in an extra-car entry or with a backmarker team.

I wish Al III success wherever he can find it. Is it a waste to chase a dream that never embraces you? I don’t know….
I was not a big fan of Little Al….I guess I admired Michael Andretti’s driving style more. I have more admiration for Al’s public recognition of his problems and re dedication to himself and others. Maybe he has gotten more than a little inspiration from his daughter. Time will tell; at least working within the IICS there are a lot of great people working for the same things and so much yet to be accomplished.
