I watched Gil win at Laguna Seca in '95! I asked, who's this guy?! I followed him ever after. I hated to see him toiling away with poor results in Walker Racing, testing Goodyear tires rather than contending for wins and championships with the 'right' combination of tires, chassis and engine. Cristiano da Matta and Helio Castro Neves were also paying their dues and learning racecraft in, ah, less-than optimum equipment in that era.
As you said, Gil's experience in BAR and Penske Racing should stand him in good stead.

Oh, yeah; I used to be taken-aback by all the Hispanic fans of Fernandez, Michel Jourdain, Junior and Mario Dominguez at races in downtown Houston, downtown Miami, Homestead and Laguna Seca. I've been a Fernandez fan since he started in CART, and I was delighted when he and Tom Anderson formed their own team.

I'm glad he's coming in, but I think it'll take him a season to get going.

It would be nice to see Adrian Fernandez back. I live in Southern Cal and went to Long Beach in 2002. There was a stretch where AF was either leading or contending, and the fans were very charged up for it. I didn't realize he had that kind of fan base because you couldn't pick it up on tv, but being in stands--you could feel it.

That's when I began to think a little more broadly in terms of drivers' ethnicity. A Mexican race driver doesn't necessarily appeal to fans living in Mexico, he picks up a lot of fans in the US from Mexico, or who have some sentimental connection to it. And these days we're getting a lot more Central and South American immigrants (I have a coworker from Belize!), they like the guys from their neck of the woods. And these are people, here in the US, who watch TV and buy sponsors products, etc.
