hi george, great curveball with this article...one of my favorite movies is The Right Stuff...although I was not even born when the space race was full on, I was amazed on the great lengths it took to even be in Earth's orbit...now, what about some IndyCar racing?

Great article...keep up the good work!

"Forgive me while I veer slightly from the usual subjects involving IndyCar racing"

WHY I NEVER!!! And you call yourself an IndyCar blog??? This is preposterous, and I won't stand for this type of rubbish. Good day, Mr. Phillips.

Hey George,

Love your articles. Each and every one is heartfelt and well-spoken. Like you, I am as much space buff as Indycar buff and I just wanted to point out one minor mistake in your article (and it is not one that diminishes it in any way). Apollo 9 also remained in Earth orbit (you mistakenly stated Apollo 7 was the last to remain before Apollo-Soyuz & Skylab), albeit with the lunar module as well as the CM.

Keep up the good work George! I look forward to more great articles.

Kohl - I started to touch on how Armstrong has chosen to distance himself from that accomplishment, but decided not to. It's sad that he has become so reclusive and so disdainful of that event. My two favorite Apollo astronauts were Alan Shepard (Apollo 14) and Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 & 13); mainly because of the way they carried themselves AFTER their astronaut days. -- GP

Although too young to remember most of the space exploration I have grown up a few miles from Neil Armstrongs current and birth home. Every July the town starts to buzz and the Space Museam that bears his name welcomes thousands of visitors. He, unfortunatley, is not as open to all of it. He has been hiding in his house for several years and won't answer questions from anyone. Sadly he has become just another legend.

Great post George,

Alas, I am too young to remember the glory days of the Apollo program. I do remember the very tail end of it. By then it seems it had become a ho-hum affair, and America had turned it's gaze in upon itself for the duration of that aberration of a decade we call the 70's.

I few years ago I picked up a documentary on the Apollo 11 mission from the Library to watch with my kids. They were 7 and 6 at the time. After watching the footage of that enormous Saturn V lumbering into the heavens my son turned to me and said "Dad, I don't think I want to be an astronaut. It looks too dangerous"

Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins are true giants of history. We forget just how dangerous these missions were, and what a triumph of engineering, science, technology, and good old fashioned "cojones".

Great article. The Christmas Eve braodcast & the reading of Genisis I, verses 1 - 8 is the most moving moment I have ever experienced watching TV. I still get goose bumps tinking about it. The whole program was a stupendous achievement.
