Bobby Rahal never put the "team" above his personal gain/revenue derived from it and this was the major reason he went from 3 cars to 1...in his wake Rahal left a number of disgruntled sponsors (Patron, Ethanol, Argent, Pioneer) and burned through more than a few drivers and hurt their careers in the process (Meira, Rice, Simmons, Hunter-Reay's results pre Watkins Glen). The inability of Rahal to pony up and switch to a Dallara when it was apparent the Italian car had a significant performance advantage is just one example of how this affected the team's results and probably impacted the ability to retain Danica, as well. Questionable strategic calls on track also showed the team's leadership was lacking (watch the 2007 Indy 500 and see how Jeff Simmons was running in the Top-5 much of the race, only to be victimized by an ill-timed final pit stop with the rain rolling in)

Hi George,

I know this question is not related to your nice piece on Rahal, but I know you are the best blogger out there for responding to your readers, and I have a question for you:

With TG out of the Indy power structure, what do you think will happen the next few years? I am really worried. It seems to me, with sponsors likely continuing to fall by the wayside, and no clear-cut leadership in sight, is the IRL a goner? What will that mean for the 500? Please tell me no tin-tops for the 500!

No, I'm not a total doom-and-gloom guy. That would make me an old Champ Car fan! Just kidding. No offense to those folks. But I"m not one of them. I've posted on your sight before, as you know, about my passion for the IndyCar product, but I'm really worried about the near future.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Vic Lovisa,

Is he still running the BMW M3 ALMS program? Both his buildings in Hilliard have had big "available for lease" signs on them for a while, but there has been a lot more cars in the parking lot the last week or two. If he is still involved in the BMW deal, where is it run out of? You can't blame him for no longer being interested in ownership now that he has his son to follow.
